CJ Matherne is an artist whose work is shaped by growing up along America’s vulnerable coastlines, where environmental instability, denial, and collapse are lived realities rather than abstractions.
Living and working in Round Top, NY, Matherne draws on his experiences in Houma, Louisiana and Miami, Florida—places marked by sinking land, violent storms, and cultural stubbornness. Through painting, drawing, and sculpture, he creates works that hover between observation and invention, revealing how what appears solid is often mutable and unstable. He holds an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
