ABOUT WAITING LEGION:
In March 2024, artist and designer Braden A. Hollis relocated from Los Angeles to Brooklyn, a move that reshaped both her creative rhythm and relationship to space. Working not just from home, but with home—as material, metaphor, and framework—Braden transformed her domestic space into a site of reflection, improvisation, and quiet transformation.
This exhibition extends that practice, inviting audiences into a lived-in, collaborative environment shaped by care and the aesthetics of everyday experience. Featuring photographs, sculptures, furniture, publications, textile, collage, drawings, and paintings by Braden and a select group of practitioners working across art and design, the space resists conventional installation. Instead, it reflects a layered way of living with art: not apart from life, but entwined with it.
Inspired by the legacy of artists like Hemsley Winfield, founder of the New Negro Art Theatre Dance Group, Braden draws from a lineage of reflection and redefinition. As John O. Perpener III writes in African American Concert Dance: The Harlem Renaissance and Beyond, before a major performance, Winfield “engaged in a reflective period of studying, rehearsing, and redefining his aesthetic goals.” In this spirit, Braden treats the home not as backdrop, but as a space for process, play, and purpose—a setting where art and life unfold together, in real time.
