Hard Palate Opening Reception at (Creative Legion) | Hudson Jazz Festival
On Saturday, October 4, (Creative Legion) opened Hard Palate, an exhibition curated by Tara Foley that explores the relationship between anatomy, architecture, and expression. Presented in conjunction with the Hudson Jazz Festival’s Sounds Around Town, the opening reception brought together art, music, and community for an evening that celebrated the voice as both form and metaphor.
The exhibition’s title references the hard palate — the arched roof of the mouth where breath becomes tone and tone becomes voice. Through sculpture, painting, photography, and installation, nine artists translated that transformation into visual form, giving shape to the intersections of identity, memory, and gesture.
Featured artists included Becca Van K, Kelsey Renko, June Glasson, Lexa Walsh, John Desousa, Daria Irincheeva, ransome, Gracelee Lawerence, and Ace Lehner, PhD — each contributing works that invite reflection and conversation on how personal experience becomes shared expression.
The afternoon featured a live jazz trio performance by Maia Jarrett, Leo Belsky, and Noah Jarrett, filling the gallery with sound that echoed the exhibition’s central themes of resonance and rhythm. Guests gathered among the works, connecting with artists and fellow community members as the sun set over Hudson.
The program continued the following weekend with Hudson Open Studios (Oct 11–12), where visitors were invited to return to (Creative Legion) to meet participating artists and learn more about their creative practices.
Hard Palate was on view at (Creative Legion) from October 3 through December 5, further establishing our space as a home for exhibitions that connect local and global voices through contemporary art.
